This training informs educators of the historical impact war trauma has on Minnesota’s refugee population, explores the contrasting conceptions of mental health/illness in Somali and Western cultures, reveals the impact of culture and religion on understanding and dealing with mental illness, exposes the unique barriers East African populations face when attempting to access mental health solutions, and gives solutions for the design of more effective school-based mental health programs for refugee youth.

Somali Language Curriculum Development
This program is designed specifically for native speakers of the Somali language who have oral proficiency
Provides students with a strong foundational basis for the development of BOTH native and second language skills. Students experience opportunities to develop, maintain, and enhance a more formal command of the Somali language through a variety of contexts (oral, reading, writing, etc.).
This curriculum covers levels 1-5 and links classroom experiences to cultural and community life, imparts the value of bi-lingual capabilities and diverse identities, and contributes to closing the opportunity and achievement gap.
